Tan Dun, Guest of Honor
Grammy and Oscar Award-winning composer and conductor Tan Dun has made an indelible mark on the world’s music scene with repertoire that broadens the boundaries of classical music and Eastern and Western traditions. His music has been played throughout the world by the leading orchestras, opera houses, and on radio and television, including a commission by the International Olympic Committee to write the Logo Music and Award Ceremony Music for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games and a commission by Google/YouTube for the world’s first collaborative online orchestra to connect aspiring musicians with world class conductors and star soloists. He has won some of today’s most prestigious honors including 1998 the Grawemeyer Award for classical composition, the 2000 Grammy and Oscar Awards for his soundtrack to the movie Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, and Musical America’s Composer of The Year in 2003. Tan Dun’s opera Tea: A Mirror of Soul, which sets the sounds of water, paper, ceramic and stone instruments with orchestra, had its World Premiere in 2002 in Tokyo, made its American Premiere at the Santa Fe Opera Festival in 2007, and now comes to Philadelphia for its much-anticipated East Coast Premiere. |
