Bringing Back Boccanegra
By Opera Philadelphia
It's hard to believe, but it's been 40 years since we last performed Verdi's Simon Boccanegra. The production by what was then known as the Opera Company of Philadelphia was performed in the Academy of Music in 1983. Guillermo Sarabia sang the role of Boccanegra, with James Morris as Fiesco and Ellen Shade as Amelia. You can even read the review from The New York Times!
We recently found the photos from 1983 in our archives, taken by longtime Opera Company of Philadelphia photographer Trudy Lee Cohen. Enjoy this trip down memory lane and join us for a new production of Simon Boccanegra this September at Festival O23.
