Opera Philadelphia

Young Friends uniting in support of an Emerging Artist

By Sarah Alderfer

In October, VIVACE, Opera Philadelphia’s Community for Young Friends, traveled to Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts to cheer on baritone Kyle Miller. As a member of the Young Friends Advisory Committee, which works to drive program engagement and grow participation in VIVACE, I was pleased and proud to take part in this exciting day trip to New York in support of an emerging operatic talent.

Cheering Kyle’s Big Step: The Met Debut

Kyle was making his Metropolitan Opera debut singing the role of Sensor in Jeanine Tesori’s Grounded, an opera that explores a woman’s journey from fighter pilot to drone pilot. Performing at The Metropolitan Opera is a significant milestone in any singer’s career, and Kyle's performance that day shined brightly.

What made the moment even more special is that the members of VIVACE had sponsored Kyle’s debut with Opera Philadelphia the year before.

VIVACE membership helps to make the Emerging Artist program at Opera Philadelphia possible and provides us, as opera fans, the unique opportunity to socialize with up-and-coming singers. Even though he lives in Germany, Kyle went out of his way to connect with us during his time in Philadelphia, doing everything from getting to know the VIVACE community at the annual Emerging Artist Recital to sneaking away from Madame Butterfly rehearsals for a spirited game of ping pong with Maestro Corrado Rovaris.

After his Met performance, we gathered for drinks with Kyle to congratulate him on this incredible achievement. The evening was more than just a typical happy hour—it was a celebration of community and connection, centered around an artist’s career milestone. Kyle graciously took the time to connect personally with everyone who came out to celebrate and support his Met debut.

Conversations flowed as freely as the drinks, and the room buzzed with a palpable sense of excitement. It felt like a reunion of old friends, brought together by a shared love of opera and the emerging voices that are pushing the art form forward.

Kyle was effusive about the sense of community he felt with VIVACE, saying:

“The VIVACE members I’ve met are warm, open, and genuinely curious about opera. I love seeing people who are willing to take time out of their day to put themselves in new environments and meet new people. VIVACE is truly unique in that it not only connects artists with audiences but also connects members to each other, creating a community around opera.”

Uniting Under One Cause: An Emerging Artist

Like many art forms, opera relies on continuously nurturing new talent to thrive. One powerful way to contribute to the future of opera and ensure its ongoing vitality is by sponsoring artists.

The Opera Philadelphia stage has a history as a welcoming environment where rising vocal talents are supported and encouraged. Opera Philadelphia’s Emerging Artist Program provides stimulating artistic challenges in a professional setting for opera performers at various stages of their development. The program is a pivotal time in a young singer’s career which gives them the opportunity to explore their potential as an artist.

It has been incredibly rewarding for me to play a small part in this program through VIVACE, and I’m not alone.

“Underwriting a performer as a group is truly an honor,” said fellow VIVACE member Clint Walker.

"Opera Philadelphia’s emerging artists go on to singing careers worldwide. You know you’re investing in major talent. While they are in Philly, you get to spend time with them, ask questions about the art form, and get to know them a bit personally. It’s cool to befriend singers like Kyle and then follow their careers.”

As young professionals ourselves, it’s rewarding to be able to help another person starting out in their career. Although none of us could support an artist on our own, VIVACE together can help set artists on their professional journey.

Looking to the Future: Welcoming Kevin Godínez

For the 2024-25 Season, VIVACE is excited to rally behind baritone Kevin Godínez, who will make his Opera Philadelphia debut as Masetto in Don Giovanni in April 2025. Earlier this month, VIVACE members had the opportunity to meet Kevin in person and see him perform at the annual Emerging Artist Recital & Member Reception.

The recital showcased the amazing talent of this year’s group of artists, and Kevin’s performance was a highlight. He performed a beautiful song written by a poet from his native Costa Rica. It was great meeting him after the performance and we are excited to continue getting to know him throughout the season. We look forward to seeing him take the stage with Opera Philadelphia very soon.

About VIVACE

Opera as an art form has been associated with traditionalism and exclusivity; however, Opera Philadelphia is forging a new path. In the audience, that looks like opening the opera up to new audiences with Pick Your Price, a revolutionary new ticketing initiative. On stage, that looks like giving young singers the opportunity to bring new perspectives that challenge traditional norms and expand the range of stories that opera can tell.

VIVACE is a community of young friends between the ages of 21-45 who are excited about opera. We welcome anyone, especially those who might be new to opera, to join us. We invite anyone who wants to discover more about the opera to become a member and help an emerging artist discover the potential within themselves.

Become a VIVACE Member by making an annual gift of $80 or a 12-month pledge starting a $7/month.
