Ted Huffman

Ted Huffman, a New York native, studied Humanities at Yale University and apprenticed at San Francisco’s Merola Opera Program.

He recently revived his production of 4.48 Psychosis (Sarah Kane/Philip Venables) for the Royal Opera House and Prototype Festival, a show that won the UK Theatre Award for Achievement in Opera and nominations for an Olivier Award, a South Bank Sky Arts Award, and an RPS Music Award. During the 2018-2019 season, he directs Salome (Oper Köln), Madama Butterfly (Opernhaus Zürich), Rinaldo (Oper Frankfurt), Il trionfo del tempo e del disinganno (Royal Danish Theater and Malmö Opera), and A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Opéra National Montpellier). 

Past work includes Arthur Lavandier’s Le premier meurtre (Opéra de Lille), Luke Styles’ Macbeth (Glyndebourne), Ana Sokolovic’s Svádba (Festival Aix-en-Provence, Opéra Angers-Nantes, Les Théâtres de la ville de Luxembourg, Festival Ljubljana), Poulenc’s Les mamelles de Tirésias (La Monnaie, Festival d’Aix-en-Provence, Dutch National Opera, Juilliard Opera, Aldeburgh Festival), and Ullmann’s Der Kaiser von Atlantis (Central City Opera, Juilliard Opera, Greenwich Music Festival). His production of Peter Maxwell-Davies’ The Lighthouse was nominated for an RPS Music Prize for Opera and won the WhatsOnStage Award for Opera. His production of Hans Werner Henze’s El Cimarrón was nominated for “Best Direction” in the Opernwelt Jahrbuch.

Ted was a MacDowell Fellow in 2017 with composer Philip Venables.
